The Chowan University football team suffered a 33-14 setback to the Virginia Union University Panthers on Saturday at Hovey Field. The Panthers improve to 6-1 on the season and remain perfect in league and divisional play with 3-0 and 2-0 marks, respectively. The Hawks fall to 4-3 overall on the season and move to 2-2 against CIAA opponents and 0-2 against divisional.
Winston-Salem State University pounded out 444 yards of total offense with Tyree Massey rushing for a career high 164 yards, as the Rams rolled to a 36-19 win over St. Augustine’s University at the George Williams Sports Complex on the St. Augustine’s campus.
With the victory, WSSU improves to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA, while the Falcons fall to 0-7 and 0-4 in the CIAA.
Marquise Grizzle became the all-time leading scorer in Shaw University’s football history; but, it was not enough to overcome a 41-22 defeat to visiting Livingstone College (3-2 overall, 2-2 CIAA, 2-0 Div.) at the Durham County Memorial Stadium.
The Shaw Bears (0-7; 0-4; 0-2) opened the game with a 14-0 lead but Livingstone advances into a tie for the Southern Division lead with 41 unanswered points against the Bears.
The Elizabeth City State University Vikings scored all their points in the first half and cruised to a 28-10 win over Lincoln University Saturday afternoon at Roebuck Stadium.
The Vikings improve to 8-0 all time in their series with Lincoln while the Lions slip to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in CIAA play. ECSU finished the day with 500 yards of total offense.
Johnson C. Smith and Fayetteville State battled through an entertaining third quarter that included three non-offensive touchdowns, but JCSU prevailed in a huge 37-20 win over the Broncos at the Irwin Belk Complex.
Bowie State University made it four wins in a row and held on to spoil Virginia State University’s Homecoming by a score of 22-19 on national television. The win improves Bowie State’s overall record to 6-1 and moves the Bulldogs to 4-0 in the CIAA and 2-0 in the North.
