In a battle of the two top teams in the CIAA Northern Division, Bowie State University remained unbeaten (3-0) in the CIAA North, beating Virginia Union University 23-19. Virginia Union is now 2-1 in the CIAA North and 4-1 in the conference.
Bowie State (7-1, 5-0 CIAA, 3-0 North) was led on offense by freshman Nyema Washington with a career-best 211 passing yards in his first start of the year. Washington completed 10-of-24 passes, threw two touchdowns but was intercepted four times. Graduate Kendall Jefferson rushed for a game and career-high 148 yards on career-best 18 carries. Bowie State’s top receiver was redshirt junior Nyme Manns with a game-high 147 yards on six receptions and two scores.
The Winston-Salem State University pounded out 528 yards of total offense and redshirt- freshmen Rod Tinsley Jr and Kerrion Moore had big day’s, as the Rams held off a determined Livingstone College team, 23-21 in a thrilling late minute win at Alumni Memorial Stadium on the Livingstone campus.
With the victory, WSSU improves to 4-4 overall, 4-1 in the CIAA and 3-0 in the Southern Division, while the Blue Bears fall to 3-3 overall, 2-3 in the CIAA and 2-1 in the Southern Division.
The game would come down to the final 20 seconds. On fourth and nine, the Livingstone Blue Bears would put kicker, Leonardo Manzo onto the field for a potential game-winning, chip shot 32 yard field goal.
But this day the football gods light shined brightly on the Rams, as Manzo’s field goal sailed wide left, turning the ball over to WSSU with just second left in the contest.
The Chowan University football team earned a 24-20 victory over the visiting Elizabeth City State Vikings. The Hawks improve to 5-3 overall with the victory and advance to 3-2 against CIAA opponents. The Vikings move to 4-3 on the year and drop to 2-3 in league play. Chowan’s win over Elizabeth City State was the Hawks’ first divisional win of the season and marked the first win against the Vikings in program history.
The Fayetteville State University football team earned a 40-18 divisional, Homecoming victory over Saint Augustine’s University at the Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium. FSU improves to 4-4 overall and 4-1 in the CIAA, while the Falcons remain winless at 0-8.
The Virginia State University Trojan Football Team moves to 5-3 overall record, 3-2 in the conference after ousting the Lincoln University Lions with a final score of 35-0.
Johnson C. Smith University (2-3 CIAA, 2-1 South) used a late defensive stand to take a 17-10 homecoming win over Shaw at the Irwin Belk Complex in front of a capacity crowd of 4,517.
Shaw (0-8, 0-5 CIAA) had a chance to tie it late in the fourth quarter. Trevante Long hauled in the pass from Terrence Shamby, III to set up a first and goal at the JCSU four with three seconds remaining. Following a Shaw timeout, Shamby’s pass to sail high over receiver Andre Polite as time expired, giving the Golden Bulls the 17-10 win.
