Fayetteville State Sweeps JCSU Volleyball, 3-0

Box ScoreCharlotte, N.C. (Oct. 15, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith volleyball team held a late lead in set one, but could not overcome Fayetteville State, falling 3-0 (22-25, 17-25, 19-25) at Brayboy Gym on Thursday night.

Set one saw the Golden Bulls come out strong, bolting to an early 4-1 lead after a kill from
Makayla Adams (Michigan City, Ind.).  The lead was short-lived as Fayetteville State battled back, taking the 7-4 lead after an ace from Ashley Britton.

After JCSU took a 14-9 lead, FSU fought back to tie it at 19-19 after an ace from Brittany McCoy.  The Broncos would surge ahead, taking the 25-22 win in the first set.

The Broncos then would go on a 5-0 run in set two, making it 10-5 and didn’t look back.  FSU led by as many as 10 at 16-6.  JCSU closed to within three points at 17-14, but the Broncos regrouped and went on an 8-3 run to close out set two, winning 25-17.

Set three was no different, as Fayetteville State built a 17-9 lead but JCSU would close to within 18-16 after a Salesse Stovall (Roanoke, Va.) ace.  FSU would respond, scoring six points to take a 24-16 lead.  JCSU would try to get closer but a kill from Jayde Jacobs ended the match with the Broncos taking the 25-19 win in set three.

Senior outside hitter Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, S.C.) led the way for JCSU, tallying eight kills on the night while teammates Makayla Adams and Salesse Stovall recorded four each.  Adams had nine digs while freshman Shanae Hughes (Orangeburg, S.C.) secured 17 assists for the Golden Bulls.
Jana Ajdukovic (Zagreb, Croatia) contributed three block assists and one solo on the night.

Fayetteville State (6-9, 4-4 CIAA, 3-2 Southern Division) got 11 kills from Shavon Shaw and 10 from Jayde Jacobs.  Shaw also had 11 digs.  Jessica Hardy was able to dish out 27 assists for the Broncos in the win.

JCSU (3-13, 1-7 CIAA, 0-5 Southern Division) will return to the court on Monday, Oct. 19, travelling to CIAA Southern Division foe Shaw for a 6:00 p.m. match.
