Charlotte, N.C. (July 31, 2015) –Former Johnson C. Smith University wide receiver Avius Capers has been signed by the Carolina Panthers, the team has announced.
Capers, a Charlotte native and Independence High School product, joins his hometown team as they begin mini camp on the campus of Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. on Friday, July 31. This past spring, Capers was invited to the Panthers rookie mini camp but was unsigned after the tryout sessions.
Capers completed his collegiate career in 2014 and finished with 136 receptions for 1,554 yards while scoring 13 touchdowns. He had two 100-plus yard receiving games in his career, going for 112 yards on six catches vs. Livingstone on November 8, 2014. During his freshman season with the Golden Bulls, he managed a career-high 119 yards on four catches, also against Livingstone. During that performance, he caught a career-long 75 yard touchdown pass in the 26-13 JCSU victory.
