Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 21, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith football team will welcome Shaw University to Charlotte for the annual JCSU homecoming game this Saturday, Oct. 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
The Golden Bulls (2-5, 1-3 CIAA) are flying high after knocking off Southern Division foe Fayetteville State last Saturday afternoon. JCSU forced four Bronco turnovers, all interceptions by safety Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.).
Thomas’ interceptions included two touchdowns. His first score came with 1:05 left in the third quarter when he stepped in front of a Derek Bryant pass and raced 43 yards to pay dirt. Thomas also added a 24-yard touchdown return midway through the fourth quarter to provide the 37-20 final. That performance earned him several awards including CIAA Defensive Back of the Week and BOXTOROW’s National Defensive Player of the Week.
Quarterback Harold Herbin (Fayetteville, N.C.) rushed for 90 yards, passed for 124 yards with two touchdowns against his hometown team. Receivers Roderick Carter (Miami, Fla.) and
Fred Scott (Stone Mountain, Ga.) each had productive games with Carter hauling in three receptions for 94 yards and a score while Scott catching four passes for 63 yards and two scores. Carter’s touchdown catch was on the first JCSU play from scrimmage and went 69 yards.
Shaw (0-7, 0-4 CIAA) enters the game after dropping its seventh consecutive contest, a 41-22 homecoming loss to Livingstone last Saturday. Dating back to last season, Shaw has lost nine straight and 13 of its past 14 games with the only win coming in a 35-34 homecoming win over JCSU on Oct. 25, 2014.
Offensively, Shaw is led by Marquise Grizzle, as he has rushed for 248 yards on the season. Quarterbacks Quenton Rucker and Terrence Shambry have combined for a total of 1, 134 yards on 95-of-204 passing. Shambry has started the last two games for the Bears, including last week’s loss against Livingstone. Against the Blue Bears, he connected with eight different receivers.
Moses White leads the Bears defense with a total of 74 tackles on the season. Roland Green and has 71 stops while Thomas Street has 46 for the Bears.
The game will be broadcast live on AM 1450 WGNC. Dave Friedman and Josh Diggs will have the call with the pregame show starting at 12:30 p.m. WGNC also offers a live audio and video stream of the game at JCSN.WGNC.NET.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early, as streets around the JCSU campus will be closed due to the homecoming festivities.
