Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 8, 2015) – Livingstone volleyball came back from an early deficit in set one and cruised to a 3-0 (22-25, 8-25, 19-25) win over Johnson C. Smith in CIAA Southern Divisional play on Thursday evening in Brayboy Gym.
In set one, JCSU led by as many as four points at 12-8, but the Blue Bears battled back, eventually taking their own four point lead at 19-15. The Golden Bulls made a run, taking the 22-21 lead by Livingstone rallied to take the 25-22 win.
Livingstone started hot in set two, bolting to a 9-1 cushion and cruised to the 25-8 win to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Blue Bears again started hot, vaulting to a 16-8 lead after four straight aces from Shantell Billups. The Golden Bulls were able to close to within 20-15, but after a Livingstone timeout, the Blue Bears regrouped, and closed the match, winning 25-19.
JCSU got 10 kills from freshman Anteesha Smoots (San Antonio, Tex.) in the losing effort. Senior Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, S.C.) had six kills. Doctor also added three block assists. Sophomore Makayla Adams (Michigan City, Ind.) also had six kills while Khadijah Segura (Minneapolis, Minn.) added 12 assists. Defensively, Adams led the way with eight digs.
Livingstone got 17 kills from Lareecia Swiney in the winning effort. Steveen Cotton had 30 assists and Shantell Billups had seven digs. Billups also had six aces.
JCSU falls to 3-11 overall, 1-5 in CIAA play and 0-3 in Southern Division play. Livingstone improves to 4-8 overall, 1-5 in CIAA play and 1-2 in the Southern Division.
The Golden Bulls will entertain Winston-Salem State on Monday, Oct. 12 at 6:00 p.m. in Brayboy Gym in another CIAA Southern Division matchup.
