Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 26, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith University volleyball team fell behind early to Shaw University 6-1 in set one and fell to the visiting Bears 3-0 (10-25, 20-25, 26-28) in a CIAA Southern Divisional match on Monday evening in Brayboy Gym.
The Bears quickly built a 6-1 lead in set one and led by as many as 12 at 20-8. The Bears took set one 25-10 after hitting for a .345 percentage.
In set two, the two teams battled closely, with neither team able to pull away. White JCSU leading 20-17, Shaw went on an 8-0 run to close the set, winning 25-20.
Set three was another close battle, as JCSU again built a three point cushion at 19-16 after an ace from freshman Anteesha Smoots (San Antonio, Tex.). Both teams would battle closely down the stretch. Tied at 23-23, JCSU jumped ahead 24-23 and had a chance to close out the set, but a ball handling error drew Shaw even at 24-24. The Bears would jump ahead 27-26 after a kill from Keveesha Wattley. Shaw closed the match, winning 28-26 when JCSU hit into the net on the next play.
The Golden Bulls got an eight kill performance from Smoots, while Jana Ajdukovic (Zagreb, Croatia), Salesse Stovall (Roanoke, Va.) and Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, S.C.) all finished with four kills each. Khadijah Segura (Minneapolis, Minn.) had 21 assists. Adjukovic led JCSU defensively with five digs.
Shaw got 12 kills from Wattley and 36 assists from Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez.
JCSU falls to 3-15 overall, 1-9 in CIAA play at 0-7 in Southern Division action. Shaw improves to 13-9 overall, 7-3 in CIAA play and 6-1 in Southern Divisional play.
JCSU will close their home schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 28 with a nonconference match against Benedict. Prior to the match, JCSU will honor its four senior players
