Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 22, 2016) – Johnson C. Smith University senior men’s basketball player Stedmon Lemon has been named CIAA Player of the Year as voted on by the head coaches and the sports information directors.
A Lithonia, Ga. product, Lemon finished the 2015-16 season as the CIAA’s top scorer as he finished the year averaging 22.1 points per game in conference play. Lemon also led the league in numerous categories including total field goals (125), total points (332), and points per 40 minutes (29.5). He also was second in defensive rebounds with 90.
In addition, he scored in double-figures in 23 of the 24 games in which he played and had a season-high 31 points in JCSU’s 102-92 win over Shaw this past Saturday, which clinched the CIAA Southern Division title and solidified the No. 1 seed for JCSU in this week’s CIAA Tournament.
For the year, he shot 48.7% from the field (189-388) and was 34.9% (44-126) from long range. He also returned a 72.3% (94-130) from the free throw line. In addition to his scoring prowess, Lemon averaged 7.0 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists per game.
He led JCSU in scoring on 15 occasions, in rebounding eight times, in assists four times, in steals four times and in blocks three times.
For his performances this season, he was voted as CIAA Player of the Week on three occasions (Nov. 24, Dec. 1, and Dec. 22).
Lemon joins Trevin Parks as one of only two individuals from JCSU to be named CIAA Player of the Year. Parks captured the honor as a sophomore in 2011.
JCSU will begin pursuit of the 2016 CIAA Tournament Championship on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.
